Ain't that the truth. I suppose that was the root of my frustration. But maybe it takes something as black and white as sports for people to *allow* themselves to take a side so enthusiastically. GooOOO TEAM!

I agree with everything, I think sports (or anything a group of people feel passionately about) can provide a fun way to bond and connect over a common goal. It's great to see that so many people seem to feel positively about their teams.

Honestly, I've never been "into" sports...I understood them and I knew what they meant to other people, but I never got into them.

Except for swimming. I used to Love swimming! I can swim like a catfish (underwater) but as a black man with a negative buoyancy, don't expect me to float.

Bicycling is another exception. I like to bike, but I think it's more for enjoying the scenery and to get my parents off my back about going outside every once in a while.

Speaking of outside, I like to rollerblade as well. Rollerblading and Skating. Skating is fun! I recently started going to an Afterhours party here in Atlanta at a skating rink. I learned that after dancing for hours a night, every weekend for years, I am not nearly in shape as I thought I was...after just a few minutes of skating.

I think Whitewater rafting is also fun...

I've always loved sports, but not like some people. Some people take it to an extreme and I'm sorry...I Just don't get it! Don't get me wrong, I love sports. I played baseball, I played football, I ran track and pole vaulted, but I never and my family never, worshipped a football team as others have and do.

Long story short, I wish some people would care for ALL OTHERS like they care for their sports team and/ or favorite race car driver, mixed martial artist etc., etc., etc.

I guess everyone wants to be a part of a team, not realizing that we are a part of something much greater, AND THEN... still seperate but equal!

Football:
I would watch the games as a child with my mom and sisters. it was the only time I felt like I had a family.

Baseball:
All I had was an AM radio in my beat up old car. A summer spent listening to the Phillies and Sinatra changed my life :)


I now watch the games with my kids and it's a bonding experience. We all route for a common goal and cheer.
We win together, we lose together - we are linked together forever.


(side note tangent)
I recently felt the same way for the inauguration event. I asked "Why would I want to watch some guy repeat some words?" Even if it is history, it's not the most exciting thing to watch.

The reason I came to was to be part of something bigger. To have a connection to all the other people that were doing that same thing at the same time.

So let's all get drunk, eat fried foods (actually nachos, pizza and hoagies in my house) and share a connection!

That is a beautiful and sad story. I was surprised by how many people shared family/sports associations like you described. (And Steelers seems to be a reoccurring theme, too!) Thank you for sharing.

Football (The Steelers) is important to me for the following reason:

I always saw football as some ogre game for mindless males. My older brother, however, is a huge Steelers fan. My brother is also an addict in the drug sense.

During one of his many recovery stints he lived with me. He was clean, sober and the human I always knew he could be. In that time, he taught me about football. He gave me all I needed to know about the game and never laughed at my ridiculous girl questions (ie. Why do they run INTO the pile of people instead of running AROUND them). I became a true fan mostly because he made watching the games so fun.

My brother has since relapsed in a big way, thus (painfully) forcing me to end all contact with him. Football is all I have left of him.

So I watch the Steelers, while eating various fried foods and cheer when they win and bitch when they lose because... I know somewhere, wherever he is, clean or using, that he is watching the same game at the same time and wishing he was watching it with me... just like I wish I was watching with him.
