I understand your position about sports, but bro, if you are into "Hugs"... then I can't think of a place I've given more random hugs to strangers then at a Chargers game.
For a few hours, people can come together and suspend worldly problems while drinking brews and yelling at the top of their lungs for some players they don't even know.
Is it a bit weird? Yeah. Is it fun as hell to celebrate with a bunch of Joe Schmoes? Yes indeed it is.
These are the same people we would likely tell to "fuck off" in traffic or would talk shit behind their back in the real world.
But come NFL sunday, they become best pals just for a short time while they indulge in some escape and fantasy.
In the end, it probably does much more good then harm.
So I'd say get over it, and recognize that everyone needs something to appreciate or love. Even if it's not your cup of tea, it's definitely some dudes tall can of Coors.
@Alice -
You make a good point - if it is a way to purge violent impulses, then GREAT! (But if it riles you up and makes you want to punch people - not so great.)
And I, too, am disturbed by gymnastics. Any sport that starts with a 10 and then takes off points for NOT PERFECTION has got to DESTROY self esteem!
@Liz -
"there's not much to cheer for in this country at the moment. It's FUN to be a sports fan. "
When it comes down to it, you can;t argue with FUN....or tight pants. :)
Isn't it just a way to get your aggression out, without actually (hopefully) hurting anyone? A way to forget how frustrated and difficult your life is by imagining a much worse battle to fight over.
... But then again, I hate sports too. My fiance is the first partner I've ever had who was a true sports nut, and its a bit disconcerting. He's a huge fan of the Arizona Cardinals, as he was born there... but uh... he only lived there until he was 2 or something.
Me, I just think about all the beautiful young men playing these sports (and women too sometimes) pushing themselves so hard, taking all kinds of fucked up pills, and injuring themselves all the time. Its truly sick. I picked up a book recently about the young women gymnasts of the world and the hell they go through, and all I could think about was, "yeah.. and ice skaters, and footballers, and all the rest of those pro athletes." They all go through hell, getting injuries and playing anyways, for money and recognition and fame.... for the sake of pride, really... or their parents' pride, for the youngin's.
Wow, lots of Steelers fans here... Am I the only Seahawks fan? (no jokes please! lol)
Ok, but to be honest, I love love love football. I am a ULCA alumn (GO BRUINS!) and, obviously, am a Bruins fan. It really takes me back to my college days and gives me something to cheer for when, to be quite honest, there's not much to cheer for in this country at the moment. It's FUN to be a sports fan. It's FUN to root for your team and hope your opposition loses.
When I go to Bruin games, I get decked out in my Bruin gear and even my eyeshadow is blue and yellow. I'm proud of my school and I will support my sports teams (and the academics through donations) till the end.
That's my passion and reason for being a sports fan.
Elizabeth
PS - I also like seeing guys in tight pants. :) but that's just me.
@Grumpy -
A friend mentioned "civic pride" to me today as an explanation. But as you say, it loses something when the players are guns-for-hire.
@Jello -
"And I remember how different it was when the Steelers games were on the screen and everyone was cheering..."
I think that says it all. What a wonderful memory. And thank you so much for sharing.
For me, most sports are... meh. I profess to be a Yankees fan but don't really watch the games unless it's the playoffs but even then it's only a maybe. I would be lost watching a hockey game. The only part of the rules of basketball that I truly grasp is that you have to keep dribbling the ball while you move.
But football... I am passionate about football. And I am passionate about the New York Giants. I know that part of it comes from when I was very young going to the Yale Bowl to watch them play with my dad. It was one of my first exposures to professional sports. Another reason for my love for the Big Blue Wrecking Crew is that they will forever be associated with watching games on TV with my dad. We'd yell and scream at the set, pound on the furniture and lose our minds together. That's what drew me in - the snare that hooked me.
But as I started to love the game for myself when really made me love the game was the history of the game and the accomplishments of individual players, like Y. A. Tittle (isn't that an awesome name) who held the record of 36 touchdowns in a season in `63 until Dan Marino broke it in `84. ...or Beattie Feathers, the first person to rush for 1000 yards in a season. I love that the Superbowl and I are the same age, each greeting the world for the first time in 1966. And I love seeing the the greatness of the old players echoed in games played today and realize that history is being made as we watch the games. In 20 years football fanatics will be breathlessly recounting how we witnessed the resilience of Brett Favre and downright scariness and speed of Lawrence Taylor (ok... I admit, I already do that about L.T.).
I am, as I suspect you are, John, a deeply emotional person. I am easily moved and sometimes a little embarrassed at how easily some things make me cry, but there are few things that can reduce to a big, sobbing baby than watching Walter Payton... http://tinyurl.com/86shd8
In a BIG way, I can totally relate to what you're saying. I have never been one of those sports-obsessed people.
Well...okay. Maybe a little.
I am a hockey fan. I've been a fan since I was 13 years old. Don't ask me why. It's really just the only sport that I enjoy watching.
But it's not life or death for me. As much as I love a good game, I can really take it or leave it.
Give me a nice rerun of "Desperate Housewives" any day. Now, THAT, I get! :-)
I totally get you.
What makes me wonder the most is that most playes dont come from the town they are playing for, so they have no connection with that town or its citizens, only the money is at there intrest.
Keep it up, great work bro.
I must confess, I'm a Steelers fan. I've been one as far back in my life as I can remember. I spent my early years (late 60's) living with my mom, grandparents, 2 uncles and aunt after my mom and stepfather divorced. We lived in the Wheeling/Pittsburgh area and everyone around me, my entire world, was nothing but Steelers fans.
Those years are some of the happiest moments of my life. I was the only grandchild and only child. I spent my days with grandma cooking, shopping, making special treats for church bake sales, taking the bus to Wheeling to shop and visit my mom on her lunch hour. Some days I got to ride along with my grandpa on his route (he was a milkman) and help deliver milk, ice cream, eggnog, fudgecicles and other goodies to homes all around the town. After the end of the route, while grandpa was in the office of the diary settling up his financials and paperwork for the day, I would sit in the ice cream parlor next door, enjoying a huge cone of deliciousness. I still believed in Santa and Christmas was a magical time. The streets were filled with holiday shoppers and beautiful lights. Neighbors all knew each other and there were lots of kids to play with. It was safe to allow your kids to play outside and roam the neighborhood for hours at a time. Everyone knew each others' kids and watched out for each other. We ran all day and only had to come home when the street lights came on at dark. Grandpa would give me the change in his pocket at the end of each day and I could walk to the local market and buy penny candy and a bottle of Coke (yes, in a GLASS bottle) and come home with a whole bagfull of goodness for 50 cents! Times were much simpler. Everybody had a job. Moms stayed home to take care of the house and children. Weekends were spent having picnics at the local river, crossing hanging bridges and searching under rocks for crawdads.
My uncle was drafted to go to Vietnam. I still remember the day my grandma received his draft card in the mail and how she cried all day. I remember when we took him to the airport to go to boot camp. I remember the family gathering around the TV set every night after dinner and watching the news broadcasts about the war and what was going on in Vietnam. I remember the tension in that room as everyone was glued to the TV, watching and waiting for any sign at all that my uncle was still safe and alive. And I remember how different it was when the Steelers games were on the screen and everyone was cheering and eating game food and snacks and rooting together for "our" team. It was very different than the atmosphere in the room when watching the Vietnam updates.
It was a time when all of us, all the family in that house, were ALIVE. I'm now the only one left out of all of us. All of those people who were my family, my world as I knew it, are gone now. Grandpa died in '89 from complications of diabetes after going blind and having a leg amputated. Uncle #1 (the one who went to Vietnam) died from "cancer of unknown origin" in 2000. Uncle #2 was killed in an auto accident in 2001. Aunt died from colon cancer in 2002. Mom died from septic shock in 2003. Grandma died in 2007 at the age of 92. That leaves just me now.
I guess I'm a Steelers fan because I associate watching the games and rooting for them with a time in my life when everything was good, life was simpler, the people I loved were alive and well and we were happy.
Today, I can't even tell you who plays on the Steelers team, what their record is or any statistics, but I still LOVE the Steelers and root for them every chance I get. It just brings back so many memories.
@Jessica -
what an AWESOME distinction!! "Let's make sure to cheer FOR our team, not AGAINST the other team." And i agree...It's fun to cheer. :) GooooOOOOOOOOO EVERYBODY!!
@lauralee:
"I learned to sing my teams fight song before I learned God Bless America."
That shold be a t-shirt!! And your explanation makes a lot of sense. ((HUG))!
@Cricket -
Are you saying my dreams of Pro Cheerleading are for naught!? Hmmm... you gave me an idea. Personal Cheerleaders." Wouldn't that rock?! "WOOOOo Great Job at the Bank, John!!! Gimmie a D-E-P-O-S-I-T.... what's that spell!?"
@Ellen -
Very cool to see how different teams are associated with different chapters of your life.
@Shyloh & @DrZayaz
I appreciate you taking on considerable risk by openly interacting with NOT ONLY a non sports-fan... but a NON-STEELERS FAN! Hopefully you will not be shunned at the local market.
@DrZayaz -
Bringing up Hunter S Thompson changes the whole debate. I may have to lick some frogs and *then* watch the Superbowl before I cast judgment on this mysterious sport.
@Munki -
"Camaraderie of a Common Goal." That makes a TON of sense.
@Damian - Am I shiny?! Pass me my powder! Actually, you are right about "My CHargers." Maybe a little wager is just what I need. Can I bet on the half time show? ;)
Hey, was that a little bit of hug nation I heard slipping in there? ;)
I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to wondering what's the big deal with sports. But I think, as long as people can separate sports from real life, there's nothing wrong with the escapism that comes from cheering for one's home team.
There's also that feeling of community, bonding with other fans, fitting in with people who share a common goal, even if that goal is to yell at the other team. I think it's more the joy of cheering on your own team, though. It's something people get excited about, and it's nice to share that excitement with a whole crowd of people.
I went to Catholic school, and our principal always used to say before any sporting event, "Let's make sure to cheer FOR our team, not AGAINST the other team." While I still don't understand the whys behind which team a person chooses, I can get behind the idea of cheering for someone. :)
My family did not go to Church on Sundays but we did watch Steeler games together. I was raised thinking that it was "important" in the sense of Dad was happy when they won and mad when they didn't. I've never quite shook that. Now I embrace that it's ludicrous and full of misplaced testosterone and braggadocio of the worst kind...yet I persist. I rationalize my love of sports in the way of Hunter S. Thompsons love of Football. He loved it as the closest thing to gladiatorial combat that exists today. A staged war without casualties.
And Shyloh, I live in Pittsburgh too and to be fair, it's probably only 50% of the town that only wants to talk Football. Some of us can mix it up...
To explain my passion, I would have to dive back into my childhood. I have deep and wonderful memories of playoff and super bowl parties. I learned to sing my teams fight song before I learned God Bless America. Some of my oldest recollections are of all my loved ones surrounding a TV that was broadcasting a Dolphins game. That shared camaraderie is what lassoed me in and I have never looked back. It's not only a tradition, it's a way of life for my family and friends. I personally find it fun, to share the seasonal ride and ebb and flow of my teams success of failures.
It's ok to {hug} football Halcyon ;-)
I understand where you are coming from.
It's almost like the bully in school who picked on all the underdogs for being small only to build up his comfidence and self esteem.
Sports aren't as important as the arts in school, but it seems like they are the ones getting the new uniforms and funding. I just don't get it either.
Let me know when you can make a career out of being a cheerleader or "player".
I think it is a huge waste of time and not to mention the amount of injuries these guys endure proving their testosterone levels for "the team" !!
If teachers made what these pro players made and vise versa, it would be a whole other game !!
My third husband and I don't care for sports (the second guy in my life, now deceased, was the sports nut). However, I must admit I was spoiled by working with WIOD Miami as a talk show host during the perfect season of the 1972 Miami Dolphins. My husband was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan for a while while his son was small, and he when he lived in Maryland, he cheered for the Baltimore Orioles.
The neat thing about football is that I know a lot about it from my college days (Univ. of Miami and UCLA), and some seasons, I'll watch a game and really enjoy it. We were in transit from Ontario, California to Portland, Oregon when the Chargers played their game. We had just completed a three week vacation and were filled with the sights, sounds and smells of California. I wish I'd been able to see that game, but I understand the Chargers won it during an overtime.
I'll probably watch the Super Bowl and would choose either the New England Patriots or the Miami Dolphins against all others. Now that we're settled in Portland, Oregon for ten years, the need for sports has greatly diminished.
Warm regards,
Ellen Kimball

Oy Vey!
Where do I start? I know you are trying to understand sports because the Chargers are in the playoffs...your friends all get it AND you want to get it but don't...right? It's OK. Make a bet on the Super Bowl this year. It can be a little one, say 5 bucks. If you bet the underdog (not the cartoon) make sure you get some points. Sure Thing: You will really dig the game. Now go powder your nose cutie!

I'm from Pittsburgh, and this is Steeler country! I actually don't follow the Steelers, which makes me an outcast. If you've never been to Pittsburgh, come during football season. The entire town is literally black and gold. We don't have casual fridays, we have Steelers jersey fridays. The town pretty much shut down after we won the super bowl a few years ago, and yes, there were riots. I'm not sure what would have been worse- the riots if we didn't win, or the riots when we did! I have nothing to talk about with 75% of the town, because 75% of the town only knows how to small talk about football. However, I do like the Pens. Hockey is just more fun to watch, and a good excuse to go to a bar on a Tuesday.
Primal urges...
I'm a hockey guy, Kings fan, but that's more about locale than anything else. What makes hockey great for me, hanging out with a few friends watching the game enjoying the comaradery of a common goal.
