OMG! I never thought I'd find someone that likes pink and hugs as much as (or more than?) me! How fantastic. I spread the love everyday with the hugging toll booth I have that requires everyone that comes into my cubicle must hug me and with a ton of pink on every free surface of my desk.
Awesome, awesome, AWESOME explanation!!!
Thanks! My daughter has been watching hugnation w/ me since she was 5. She also wanted to know, so I'll show her. She still hassles me because my first car was pink!
I LOVE this! You never cease to amaze and inspire. I think you and the five year old could really teach folks a lot -- like Obama for example, who refuses to attend the UN conference on Racism because some in attendance want to discuss reparations and Zionism. Maybe Zionism is the new pink and Obama fears it because he doesn't understand it?
@Jellobong
Ack! Well if this is a week of REGRET. hopefully next week will be full of DESIRES. :)
Man, this just hasn't been my week at all. On Wednesday I found out that a local club featured midget strippers on TUESDAY night, so I missed it - didn't know about it until it was over. NOW I find out that I also missed FREE PANCAKE DAY at IHOP!
Midget strippers AND free pancakes - all in the same week!!! The Gods are messing with me......
Halcyon,
This video carries the essence of why it has been such a pleasure to get to know you over these past 12 (!) years.
I started to lose my hair on top about four years ago. Last year I decided to stop fighting it and shave it down really short (4 on top / 3 on the sides). Now I'm back to the kind of haircut I had when I was 5.
I'm also really surprised when I encounter people that think it's weird to have your own website. Nearly every time it is someone who is pretty ignorant about the web.
Keep on keepin' on, dude. :-)
Wow, AWESOME video! Holy cow!
You'll be happy to note that pancakes will likely be on the market soon. This development was hinted at recently from the fine folks that created Batter Blaster via the addition of organic beet juice.
A pink waffle variant could surely be an option with minor tweaks.

@Melinda
-that is SUCH a drag when other people project their judgments on to your relationships...or boobs. ;)
@Airek -
Wanna be VP on the "HugNation" Presidential ticket in 2012? ;)
@Destin-
I think you are much better suited for red. Your edge is sharper. Meow!!!
People misjudge me on my platonic friendships with my male friends. I don't know how many times over the years I've had guy friends tell me how jealous their GF's are of me.... which always makes me laugh because I'm the LAST person to worry about. I treasure my friendships and I'd never compromise them for anything, especially if they had a GF!!
That and because I have big boobs, for some reason everyone seems to think that I'm a hooch....
lol
Beats my explanation for why I have pink hair.
:D
That was my favorite video of yours on this site, yet.
Can't say that I'm with you on red, tho.
Red, for me, is the color of passion. Yes, passion takes many forms, but oh how I do love passion.
I have known Halcyon since 1999. He is a great human being and a kindred spirit. If everyone was like him there would be no wars, no genocides, no disruptive revolutions. The world would be a much better place full of positivity and love if everyone had Hal's blood.
Peace.
@Chris
- I feel your pain. It can be tough to push the edges of the status quo without being rejected by it outright. Some rebellion needs to be more subdued.
@rana & @shells
Thank you!!!
@Jessica
@Trisha
@Natalie
Thank you! "Who can feel sad looking at pink?" YES!! The universe gives us a full set of crayola markers. It would be gosh darn sacrilege to not use the bright ones! ;)
@Jami
-that is a crazy line of logic (re: African starvation.) It seems that most times, when people impose advice like that, they are really talking to themselves in some degree. Why should they care!?!?
@Justine
-THANK YOU! It seems like the best way to avoid raising kids with stereotypes is to smash them (with a big dose of pink love.) :)
@Jaimie -
I like your answer! I sometimes tell people, "It turns every day into a parade." :)
Like Trisha said 'Who can feel sad looking at pink?'
What a wonderful explanation, it amazes me how you get the words so right :)
As one waffle- and pink-lover to another: *chapeau!*
Kewl! Thank you and this vid kept me hypnotized during watching
I can't get the video to load. It my connection I think. Ahow I guess ait about why your hair is pink. I so looking to finding out why.
I love you pink hair. I find it so funny when your hair not pink
I, too, am a lover of pink. I think it's great that you are comfortable enough with yourself to wear pink and be proud! Challenging stereotypes is awesome :)
what an awesome question and a beautiful answer.
pink rocks ... and i too wish i could do pink hair ~ but alas, the corporate world forbids it.
i love the world you live in .. we should all be so blessed.
i love these podcast things. you so eloquently say what i often fumble over when approached in public about my pink (or purple or green or blue) hair and tattoos. It's really helped me respond to people more effectively when curious people ask me stuff.
This video is absolutely lovely! As a pinkhead myself, I often get asked about my hair. I usually just say that I really like the color! I find it sad when adults think that only rule-breakers and rebels have crazy colors in their hair... Most people with crazy colors are sweet, rule-abiding, and kind individuals! I love looking funky!
I like the name "Kai"....its meaning is "keeper of the keys; earth". Also possibly (South African) "beautiful". Kai is also a Hawaiian name meaning "the sea". hmmm (nameless puppy) hmmm (Kai)
this is so great
When I first dyed my hair pink, I remember so many people asking me why, and it's weird how a lot of people wanted something beyond a reason as simple as, "I just like pink"! Your waffle allegory is a pretty perfect way of explaining it, ha ha. :>
Oh this is so great.
By now you know that I believe you’re an incredibly awesome person but seriously you should be the new, current up to date, and socially aware Mr. Rogers well you know what I mean Mr. Halcyon. Fabulous idea if you ask me and bravo on another job/video well done.
love love love & hugs
shells
Great video Halcyon, I love your work!
I love pink too! I enjoyed the video piece a lot. Thanks.
I just amped up my blonde today....looks hot. I am tempted to add some pink...but I'm sure my boss wouldn't appreciate it (and I don't want to embarrass her by being the only one ordering waffles!!!) know what I mean....
This is fantastic. :) Pink is love!!
I found that when I had pink hair, kids LOVED me! They seem to like seeing things all colorful and joyous looking! Who can feel sad looking at pink?
LONG LIVE PINK!!!
It's amazing how long it took me to be comfortable with the fact that I actually like pink. Then even longer to admit that I actually LOVE pink, and that it is my favorite color. And I'm a dang girl!! Pink gets such a bad rap.
John, thank you so much for making and sharing this video! I love that you are out there fighting a peaceful fight against both stereotypes and gender roles! I'm a 27 year old woman who's had pink hair on and off for years, it's amazing the things you hear people say about you when you have colored hair, kids are often amazed by it while adults often connect the idea of colored hair with drug users and criminals, and that is far from the truth! Some of the sweetest, nice, most law abiding individuals have colored hair! I also like that you are smashing the need for gender roles, I've had short hair most of my life, and people are always telling me to grow it out cause only boys have short hair.
Continue your valant fight and keep helping the world to be more understanding of people as individuals!
I think one of the things that people have trouble understanding with me is my metabolism. I can't eat big meals in one sitting, but I can eat little meals all day long without getting larger in size. Which sounds great to some people, but really I'm just hungry and cranky most of the day.
It's hard to explain to people the don't understand that I cannot fit all of the food on my plate into my stomach in one sitting. I can't even tell you how many times I've heard, "People are dying in Africa! Finish your food." I know that people are dying in Africa, why should I binge on food I can't comfortably finish because of this? Wouldn't it be better to just send some extra food over to those people in Africa instead of stuffing myself and eventually contributing to our over indulgent obesity epidemic?
I have pink hair too, and I often get asked why. Sometimes I just tell people it's because it makes me happy and reminds me that the world is full of great color and I hope that's enough for them to be able to embrace the idea. I like your explanation with the waffles.
@Denise

To me, red has always had a twinge of aggression in it. Thus my need for some white in there to tone it down. Maybe I just need to buck-up. :)
@Andrea -
I suppose that "on the inside" could be taken a lot of ways. But you know what I mean. :)
Ed - ME, TOO!!!!!! nomnomnom
I like red the most. But as any kindergartner knows, if you add a little white to red, you get pink. ;)
I LOVE WAFFLES!
"We're all pink on the inside" -- Great video. Thank you for sharing and spreading love.
@crowgirl -
Aww, thank you. I think my mom has been enjoying this Grandma and "grownup boys" era. :)
Personally I've always been a fan of grey and white. I HOPE I have a full head of white like Grandpa did. That being said, I am certainly not against hair customizing of any type. ;) I'm lucky that my hair actually has worked FOR my career in most ways.
Absolutely beautiful. I can see why your mom cried happy tears. It's times like that when a mom thinks, "Yes. I did it all right." And she did. And so did you.
And here I am struggling with the decision to color my gray. My wife thinks I should but it's good for my career at the stodgy company where I work. I also kinda like my silver accents.
I'd like to experiment with bold hair colors but it would certainly result in a pink slip because the company won't have it.
