Desire for Fame

March 18, 2009
10:00 AM
I just returned from my 9th year speaking at the South By Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, Texas. One thing I heard often was, "What?! You have a show on NBC.com? What the...!!? Um, I mean... 'That's great!'"

This video explains a little bit about how my hosting role happened.

The truth is, it was only when I stopped trying to get on a show that I was in the right place to be on one.

(Video includes actual audition footage. The adorable laughter you hear is Mickipedia.)

Have YOU ever tried so hard to win something that you ended up losing yourself?

It is remarkable, it is an amusing piece

I completely digg this video. (Mickipedia does, in fact, have a cutest giggles.) And your advice is right on the mark, too. I know I tend to get political on my posts, but in all seriousness: if Michael Steel had acted like you did in your second show audition and not like you did in the first, his popularity wouldn't have gone down the tubes with the Republican Party the way it has. First, he lashes out at Rush Limbaugh because he thinks that's what people want him to do, then he has to tuck tail and apologize because that's what Rush wants him to do. He's a people pleaser, and is not being genuine. See? So now things are going downhill for him in the GOP. So your advice pertains to anyone, even politicians. (Wow. I'm so boring. All I know is politics. My sister's right, I should change my major over from English to Political Science!) I am berkinix, and I endorse this post. :P

synnertia- Thanks for reading my novel.LOL...I'm a very passionate person who will stand up on a soapbox in a heartbeat for what I Love! The system isn't Perfect nothing comes without flaws. I myself have had to turn Nurses in for doing harm not good! But, we learn and we change policies all the time. I just got a policy through for the entire Nursing Home I'm at now! Everyone knows it and it IS followed for the Safety and Welfare of the Elderly! I LOVE my JOB! It can be very haertbreaking when someone is in it for the wrong reason. I was reading Nursing books at 11 years old. I'm not perfect......! Not by any means. But, it a Marriage and a Lifestyle that takes years to learn and achieve Greatness. Look at Halcyon...he has been Married to what he is doing for many years...it does take time and learning and sometimes mistakes. When you have a Passion for something you strongly believe in and Love- Greatness comes! I hope I'm not scaring any Potential Nurse here. I'm being honest it's a Hard job and it is very hard to get through school. It's not an easy lifestyle! Thanks 4 reading:)

"Got to be true to myself!"

Nice video, Hal!

Hot Tub TV - ooowwwwch.

Denise- Thank you for sharing your perspective. It is great to know that there is a system of checks and balances to ensure the right candidates make it through.

I agree that sometimes the more you try for something, the less you succeed at it. I guess there is a fine line between putting in an effort, being proactive about getting something (rather than sitting on your laurels) and just trying to damn hard.

growing into yourself is mind altering.

I don't think there could be a SXSW without you.

that audition was awesome! I especially like the part about first changing your attitude about yourself before you just drastically change something physical about yourself...like the fake boobs...Great show!

@Jenni -
"the most passionate reactions i receive from my readers are regarding the pieces i write most authentically, warts and all. when you're real with people, attraction comes naturally." That is one of the most powerful lessons that blogging can teach us, I think. Thank yoU!

@Maria
- You are too kind! Pleasure to meet you, too!

@Raven
- so sorry about the challenges in your Now. :( We never know if we are in advance or retreat. Great to hear you have faith!

@Jademaid -
Metallic pants!? *swoon* :)

@Obscura -
"Self confidence is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your personal toolbox." Ain't that the truth. So simple. So important. So ellusive.

@Brenda & @Spotman
-((HUGGG!!!)

Now for you John....I see nothing wrong with *OverExposure* ;) I tried to find Hot-Tub t.v. with no Luck! SAD:( If you could put some up...? uh...hmmm ;) Pleeeese!?! With Sweets on top! ((HUGS))

Synnertia.....I personally have to agree and disagree! I'm a *NURSE*! As a Nurse who does *LOVE* people by the masses. I believe the Health Care system is like it's own MATRIX! For myself-I WANTED to be a Nurse since I can remember. Especially at age 7. When I knew I had to become one. Then after I got into a car accident. My career was so important to myself I started out as a "Phlebotomist" eventually I ended up the Manager of my own Draw station. I can draw blood from a newborn to the oldest person and to the hardest stick around, which makes it easier to be skilled and be able to be a I.V. Nurse. I proceeded to become a C.N.A. a certified nursing assistant. Which started with delivering babies to the elderly. Then my L.P.N. as a Charge Nurse on a Telemetry Unit and Geriatrics ! I have specialized in Telemetry...Womens Health...Geriatrics ...Mental Health...Hospice...and Pediatrics....! Now as I'm going for my Bachelor's degree as an R.N as well as Minoring in Business. I'm also a "Reiki" I & II practitioner....this takes dedication and Love for the job and people!!! It comes in time and doesn't happen overnight! It's all in the RIGHT DIRECTION of LOVING people....! Now, I can safely say that the amount of people that actually make it in the health field are not as High as you would think! First...we now have Psych test and testing to see if you are even capable of going to school or to become even trained. Most don't make it past the test..or the interview prior! You have 3 interviews and background checks along with testing and drug testing. So again...most don't make it! So stay in school! Then when you get to be trained or get to school.....again people are weeded out by personality, Skills and more testing. 50% don't make it....that's a Fact a true statistic! Then...if you do get through training and get hired...etc! Your on probation and you have to orient to position and again people get weeded out! If you have to take a State test...again people are weeded out! I have been in this field for so long now that I can assure you no-one who is really in it for the money makes it!!!! Reason alone is....you will never make major money in this business unless you start from the bottom and work your way up...and seriously BUST your butt and are in it for the People! It takes major dedication and passion and love for the job! It's not just a job it's a lifestyle and a way of living. It's our calling our LIFE! For those of us (like myself) who are in it for the people it gets noticed and Promotions are given because of the fact that when you are in it for the right reason it gets noticed! So Trust me when I tell you MOST don't make it! We weed them out FAST! Yes...some do think I'm gonna do this job and make money! I'm LMAO! No-wrong idea! It's about skill and love for the job...yes you can make money when you are dedicated and really want it and go after it! Get skills and learn...keep going from the bottom up! Sometimes it is handed to you because you fit the position and will do the job with everything you have! In this field it really is a Matrix of it's own! The dynamics are amazing and so are the people who run the business...they know what they are doing! So know that I agree with you....most don't realize how hard it really is and that you have to prepare for years...You can't just walk into the health field with the wrong idea! It has to come from the Love and the Desire and the Skill and the Dedication to get to the top! At least if you want to do it right! I do disagree with you that...MOST don't even get in the door and TRUST ME the one's who are in it for the wrong reason...WE figure them out FAST and they get weeded out just as FAST ;) !! Hopefully someone who reads this and is thinking of becoming a Nurse really looks into it and looks into the Right place to go to school and to be Trained that matters as well. I drove over an hour for Nursing school because I knew it was the better place! So remember.....it takes Love and Dedication and you have to FIT! It's challenging and so rewarding! You will Forever be learning and helping others in need....that is the best feeling in the World! I LOOOOOOOOVVVVEEE MY JOB!!! IT'S MY JOB,MY CALLING,MY LIFE!!! It's a lifestyle all by itself!

Yup.....my failed Marriage. I thought if I gave more and stuck it out linger things would be better. Ultimately I lost myself. I suffered and so did my children. I'm still confused as to where I should live but clarity is coming. As I drove to my new place last night and showing my step-son and oldest daughter. It suddenly came to me why I chose to stay another year and why it was ment to happen. When I left...I left him behind and other people who I have loved. I now get the chance to make things right and set things straight. So when I leave....I can have left with Closure for my children and myself and know I leave with making things as right as I can. Some things are waiting for. The Universe has a way of making things right.

That part where you watch yourself in the video is hilarious... :)

@Josh on March 19, 2009 11:13 AM

my dear josh .. i certainly hope you have a better evening than you had today .. and that your tomorrow is bright and beautiful.

life is far too short to resort to negativity ... look at Natasha Richardson's family as well as Jade Goody's. live every day as it may be your last and don't fret about others' choices.

own your own .. and let others own theirs.

peace ~

raven

so true! it's all in teh surrender. such a paradox, life is!

another great vid and idea shared - keep em coming!

john is great

Another great vid -- and super funny story about the Hot Tub talk show! What a concept! Glad it has all worked out for you!

Good episode! I'm really enjoying these videos. You've rekindled my love of the color pink also! Thinking about taking care of my hair soon.

Being truthful about who we are and not who we think someone else wants us to be - what a tricky balance. Maslow's hierarchy of needs talks about wanting to belong....when we fear we won't belong if we are honest about who we are, it's hard to stay truthful. John, thanks for reminding us in the simple and straightforward way you do!! NBC.com - you made the right choice!
((hug))

Great show as always. NBC made the right choice.

You're the man, it's official. Excellent work.

Cool piece, and Spot on. Tough advice to live by, but ultimately, the only way to go!

More please...;-)

Yes.....a husband. It really sucks when all you hear is your biological clock ticking....

*sigh* Of course. I would guess anybody that has a soul has sold it short from time to time...or gosh, I hope so. Don't let me be alone! ;)
For me I found balance in business through "stating my price". What will make what they're asking of me "worth" it? to me, at least. I got turned down a lot, and I did not do something I didn't want to do for that price and feel Ripped Off of my own energy. *shudder* yuck. So either way I won, I either got paid what I needed to make it worth it or I retained my own energy status.

I am now in the process of putting my business sense to using it in relating. A bit scary still b/c it's new, but before long, I'll have THAT down and off to the next lesson! Yay, Adventures!

And aw man, does this mean I have to start watching TV?! ...I always said, when there's cool people like me on TV, I'll watch it." I'll keep an eye out.

Fear Less, Love More

There is always validity in the acceptance of the Wu.

I love that you have literally resorted to tricking people to come here and leave comments by always using different URLs when you link these videos. Well, here you go. I thought your search for fame really peaked with you went on Adam and Eve, the porn star reality show. Now you are so desperate to be accepted as mainstream you're even giving up your Halcyon handle. Same fame begging, just using a different, more "charitable" face.

That sort of thing happens in theatre all the time. You strive so hard, it never comes, and finally you let up, take joy in yourself and VOILA! Work!

Thanks, Halcyon

I once had a dollar figure I thought I had to make to consider myself "successful". I finally achieved it by becoming essentially a high level salesguy for a product I couldn't care less about. Every day I felt like an empty fraud and eventually got out it of it simply to save my soul. I may never make that much money again but I've been happier every day since. Yes it's a cliche but still holds true and still a damn great song..."You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes you might find You get what you need"

Oh sweetie, I soooo love your authenticity, openness and hysterical way of sharing really deep lessons and information. And yes, dare I say it? Your pink hair

Keep it up...let me know how I can serve and know you are loved, you are loving and you are lovable.

Yes. Like now. Working and working and not feeling like I am making any traction. I don't recognize myself right now. Which is why I will strive for more balance, and work on that.

You are one of my new favorite people. Met you at SxSW and you come across just like your videos, genuine. THANKS!

as usual, a terrific post by john today. the most passionate reactions i receive from my readers are regarding the pieces i write most authentically, warts and all. when you're real with people, attraction comes naturally. thanks for the reminder, babe!

It is all so true, and I have totally been there, even more than once. Great reminder and Great piece Halcyon!

yes .. i tried so hard to *win* something (be right at something that i had such strong convictions about) that i just lost my job of 5 years. after totally dedicating myself to that job .. working countless hours of unpaid overtime, volunteering several times a week ... and for what?

slammed into the unemployment lines with the millions of other .. here i am ... with no job prospects and $300 to my name .. i face homelessness? but .. in many respects .. i stand by what i believe in.

and have a feeling that something better is going to come ... i just have to believe that and be patient .. that the universe will take care of it / me.

You continue to amaze me, Halcyon. Your insight, your creativity, your generous spirit.

Kids, he's giving you really good advice here. Most older people know it's true because we've learned the lessons the hard way.

Self confidence is one of the most powerful tools you can have in your personal toolbox. Find yours, build it up, use it, and you will be rewarded in many ways.

Awesome episode! I wasn't happy with my body anymore so I changed it back to a state where I love it... now I'm 45 pounds down and working toward being the person I was back then too. I'm trying to restore who I was in high school. The person who wore metallic gold pants and ignored people who called me weird. Happiness comes from being who we are and not trying to fit into the mold of what is expected or wanted by society. Thank you so much for showing us your audition tape it means a lot to me! Being a natural beauty is what makes me happy about myself and I don't care if people like me... they can take me or leave me. :-D

@Liquid
- "Listen to that voice inside!" So true, and yet, sometimes there is so much noise that is hard to hear. :(

@synnertia

Well said!!! I am continually reminded of the danger of attachment. Being present, loving and open = the correct outcome WILL occur.

In any economic climate, but more prevalently in the current one, people are struggling to find work that will allow them to increase or maintain their ideal quality of life. The attachment to that ideal of what success looks like drives decisions to accept work that may not be in alignment with their true self. While I believe that it is good to stretch yourself in new directions, I also feel that the best work is an extension of yourself and cannot be forced out. I see this occurrence when there are industry booms. An example would be nursing, where there are many thousands of individuals pursuing the high level of salary and position openings, but I fear many are not in it for their nurturing dispositions and love of people. This does not only a disservice to the nurse, but also the community he or she serves.

Halcyon- you mention detachment from the outcome, and I think that is an important position from which to base decisions. If you can listen closely, you will find that the answer is there. It may not be the highest paying job or the most prestigious firm, but if it is in line with who you are, success will come. In the end it is up to each of us how we choose to serve, and some paths which are not as openly available may need to be forged.

Always be true to yourself! That's the best message here, but also, life is less complicated if you learn to dance just for one in the audience instead of becoming a puppet for the masses. Listen to that voice inside!
