What are YOUR fears about the economy?

This is how I feel about the current climate. There's so much to look forward to & opportunities to be had but it is so hard to listen & stay focused on those things--too much distraction & talk of ten years of gloom. For who? Why does it have to be this way? Looking forward to more here.
i love it!

@norarubinoff
John, this is amazing and just what I needed to hear today.
Much love and blessings from Cincinnati to you. Thank you for this. I can't wait to watch your next video.
i think i need to bookmark this.....
that, or carry you around in my pocket.
hmmm.
Thank you for sharing! I believe this period of time is necessary in order to restore balance to the economy. A lot of the decisions banks and individuals in financial institutions made were based on fear and greed - neither of which are strong foundations for a healthy economy. It's important that we do not send energy to this from the same negative space and instead find a way to love more, fear less. Surrender. The universe is always striving for balance and this is part of it's process. Thank you for using this platform to spread light and love. Namaste.
As positive as I try to be and not listen to the doom & gloom in the news each day, MY reality right NOW is that I have been out of work since June 1st of last year. Yeah, no work at all for over 9 months now. Only 3 interviews in all that time from the literally HUNDREDS of resumes I've submitted.
When I became laid off last June, my son was losing his roommate who moved away to go to college. We decided that I would move in with him (my son) since it would be more affordable for me on my unemployment benefits, and he would be unable to stay in his apartment on his income alone.
He has since been injured at work and is facing a neck surgery. His employer is fighting the BWC claim. Attorneys are involved. Until the claim is "approved" he can't be taken off work and receive any pay from BWC for lost wages. He continues to work and only be able to function by taking prescribed narcotics for pain, which he is now dependent upon just to function. He has to keep working so he has a paycheck coming in, even though hi doctor wanted him to be off work since last September. Once and IF his claim is approved and he can be off work, his pay from BWC will only be 2/3 of his usual income of $8.50 an hour, which amounts to less than $6 an hour. I get $200 a week in unemployment. My extension expires at the end of May.
If something doesn't happen soon, we won't be able to afford rent on June 1st and not only will I become homeless, my son will too since we depend on each other to be able to meet living expenses.
And while I was in the middle of typing this reply, my doorbell rang. It was our landlord. He informed me that due to the city raising water and sewer rates, he is increasing our rent $25 a month, RETROACTIVE to the beginning of THIS month, so he needs the money ASAP.
Yeah, I'm finding it real hard to be positive about right NOW.
All very true...Its so nice to hear you speak.
This is what the web needs to hear. Be in the moment. Understand the beauty of the now. And there is so much beauty.
Thank you again, Halcyon. What a great gift you give us. Namaste.
Right on. Like Ma Boyer told me "things are never as bad as they seem or as good as you think they will be." Enjoy the moment right now. This is it.
@dawniris
- that is a great point - and lies in the crux of the challenge. How do you "stay informed" enough? Once you know that we are in an economic downturn, how much more do you need to know for daily decisions? Sure, if you are investing money, changing jobs, etc, then it would be good to understand the financial landscape in deeper detail. But I would argue that the majority of the chatter is not a discussion for the sake of understanding... but instead a form of mindless (negative) gossip. It serves no purpose. 2cents.
i totally love your videos. you and byron katie are great and we need more shows like yours in this world. i'm way into deepak chopra also.
-shannon
NBC: Great site thank you this guy is pretty cool.
Halcyon: Wow thanks. Keep it up I figured out it's "been a long time coming."
Hey,
Thanks for discussing this. It is actually something I am dealing with right now...I don't know how to just live in the present, even though I want to. "Man in a chair" really helped put it in perspective.
Thanks!
A wise woman told me "The only REAL problems are health problems. The rest are just inconveniences."
you did a great job explaining Byron Katie..she's precious and so are you!
Love,
@lolliloo
Well....I had to take a few days to think about what to say. I have to try to become more inline and enjoy more but....when your a single Mom of 6 children and the other person who is just as responsible for raising them doesn't pay support or isn't a positive active part of their lives it makes it hard to be consistently positive.
When so much is expected of myself...I'm only 1 person doing what would be normally 2 at least. So this topic is a soft spot for myself and I'm sure many others...especially single moms who can only count on themselves. So what am I doing about it-I'm pulling up my boot straps and movin on. Yup....I'm MOVIN ON! I'm facing the fact that the economy is harsh and the deadbeat is harshest but...that IS MY REALITY!!! So "CHANGE" can be scary....but not impossible and downsizing can be ok. It's all about figuring out how to rise above it and making more of what one does have and creating more. If I can survive on my paycheck as a Nurse with 6 kids then alot of people can do it too. Thinking positive can make a difference.....I'm still mad as hell about not getting the financial support I deserve but...your right(I don't want to sacrifice my good times with my children because of someone else.)
You are wonderful, Halcyon! It is people like you and your love-based efforts that will help us get through this current experience and push us forward to a new level of understanding.
Namaste, my friend :)
Sometimes I wonder if people, in an attempt to distance themselves from the fear & negativity, push themselves to ignorance. I live on a college campus & we're basically totally isolated from the "real world," so none of this "economy" bullshit has affected us. We're a group of brilliant kids, that's our school's selling point, but I still feel concerned when we wrap ourselves in an isolationist layer of abstraction & bury ourselves in homework & think the outside world won't do anything to us.
Thanks for your beautiful, personal efforts. I started my journey with Remember, Be Here Now by Ram Das (1971?!). It is probably worth a re-read during this 'crisis'. Keep it up.
creating anxiety in my head.... yup, that's where i'm at. I've been searching the internet for what to do about anxiety, depression, shakey hands, random bursts of tears, heart pounding etc...
who would have thought that it's just as simple as realizing "what is" is what matters.
Right now I'm not late for work, getting fined, losing pay, avoiding bills, starving and living out of my car in -25
I'm just a girl in a chair, looking online for ways to feel better.
and that's all there is.
just a girl in a chair trying to be happier.
ohmygosh., these comments are GREAT!!! I may not have time to respond to them all, so just in case, THANK YOU!!!
Look for a video response next week. THANK YOU!!!
No matter how bad my week is, I know I can to to Hug Nation or come here to FRD and cleanse myself of the negative energy. You always put things into perspective for me, and i really do appreciate it. Thank you for being YOU. xxx
I too have a problem w believing in the doom and gloom aspect. I mean if it is all gone where did it go...
Unfortunately I do think this is an instance of where consumer confidence makes reality.
You know money only works because we decide to believe in it. I have a 500 million note from Zimbabwe to prove it :-)
our only reality is the present. choose to create a better story!
hugs!

I tried to imagine what a kid in middle school would be thinking about right now with all this gloom, doom, and parental freak out if they have parents in the house with them.
When I was in middle school we were asked to design bomb shelters in case the Soviets rained down nuclear warheads on the US. We read post-apocalyptic novels like "On the Beach" and "Alas Babylon" and...
Really. I think it is almost a rite of passage to have adults generate some kind of hysteria for each generation to grok.
The economy may be scary, but it isn't as scary as the fashion scene circa 1985.
Back then...
We feared the bomb.
We regretted the neon yellow parachute pants.
We desired to be older.
I just hope the middle school of today can look back and appreciate the special time that adults in this world gave them during their formative years.
LOVE IT! It's about time we got more shows with positive influences!
John, my rash really won't go away. It keeps coming back. IT'S A SERIOUS PROBLEM.
Anyway...I agree with you a hundred percent. I can't tell you how many times I'll be working my budget, looking at it, and going "THIS WILL NEVER WORK I CAN'T AFFORD ANYTHING I'M GOING TO GET EVICTED AND LOSE MY CAR AND HAVE NOTHING TO EAT AND LIVE UNDER A BRIDGE." I've found that when I get to that point, if I force myself to put the budget away and not worry about it until I'm actually on the streets, things usually find a way to work themselves out. So yes! Think positive! This video is awesome!
(And the whispering at the end is adorable.)

The media has made a fortune using propaganda to scare us into a "chained life"...It is, indeed, time for us to put that fear away, become critical observers of the media we are surrounded by, and begin living openly with a positive, healthy approach. I believe in the law of universal return...live in anticipation of the gifts the universe has to offer you, and opportunities open up for you left and right. A good example of this would be the time I needed money during a rough financial path and discovered 7 $10 bills neatly folded into my piggybank. I am also known for finding $20s and $10s and $5s on the street whenever I am in need of assistance. Again, this all comes with a positive outlook and the knowledge that opportunities are everywhere - taking off the fear-clouded glasses helps! Great video - do more positive ones, please!
Love It. Need more viewing choices like this.
For me, when speaking on the economy, I would day that is less about fear, and more about anger. I'm so ANGRY that 30% of my life's savings is *poof* (gone)...
You're completely right on!
Society is driven by fear. My wife and I are firm believers in LoA and have both experienced desirable and undesirable consequences as a result of our focus. On more than one occasion "that which we feared" indeed came to fruition. More than ever, we now attempt to guard our minds and stay intent on positive thoughts.
Our thought life is all we have. We may not be able to change the world around us, but we are able to change the way we perceive it.
Thanks for always having such AMAZING videos!
Yes... less fear based news... and more Halcyon! Live in the forever-ness of this now!
I know how you feel “MamaRed” it’s like you are writing my thoughts!
We need more outlets like this! There are a lot of fee based services that are wonderful and full of tools to help people shift, rethink old thought patterns, or hear a positive lecture but I believe there are a lot of people ready to make a shift to the positive but don’t have the funds of tools to seek the people that can help. Some of us are stressed, tired and frightened but are also wide open and raw right now clearly at the crossroads of change. It’s time to help one another, we can survive on less, use less, and barter when possible and we can come out of these difficult times with a new awareness.
We need more John/Halcyon positive to help us find the way.
Actually I’m excited!
@shells
As another wise man once said at a similar point in our nation's history, "...the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." =c)
Thank you so much for mentioning Byron Katie. I use The Work every day, and it has *vastly* improved my experience of life! I'm so grateful that a classmate once mentioned her to me. In making this video, you've made The Work available to so many others... Kudos!
If the stuff hits my fan, I'll deal with it.
But worrying about trends, bad news, even my laid off neighbor won't make them better.
Being productive, positive and loving will.
Keep the checks and balances in place Halcyon.
-d
I'm sooooooooooo with you on this one!
It is a challenge to stay out of the fear...especially when people around me are doing the "doom and gloom" crudola! My own partner does it and i gotta tell ya, it sucks eggs!
Yet, I've seen it happen over and over in my own life...I get myself freaked out and the next thing I know, all sorts of crapola is coming my way.
I'm a student of Byron Katie, a Certified Passion Test Facilitator, creator of the Kick-Butt-and-Take-Names Life mentoring program and constantly work with people to rewrite those fear-based stories.
I believe 100% in the ability for us to rewrite our stories, even the challenging ones.
I believe there are millions of miracles every moment in every day, I believe there are millions of moments of kindness every moment of every day. (www.onemillionacts.com) We simply don't focus on those...we focus on the fear. the pain. the regrests. And gee, then we wonder why we feel crappy. Hum, wonder?
Note to NBC: More of this please, more, more, more!!!!!!!!!!!! There truly is a group of us who would watch, listen, rejoice, learn.
love and light, hugs and blessings
MamaRed
it's good to keep a gratitude journal, to simply keep a focus on what's good about life---you will find there's a lot more than you've been paying attention to. thanks for your message @halcyon, which means calm, peaceful...
@terybee ((hugs))
check out the good news network for positive news www.goodnewsnetwork.org
such an inspirational message. thank you! :]
I've been following you and all your different websites and videos for close to ten years, I think... It's the highlight of my week to listen to you and your messages of love. It's great to see you up on NBC! I hope they share in the love for years to come. HUGS!
I have a couple people in my family that always think on the negitive side of "what if", and they are constantly high strung, and stessed. It makes me so sad because they can't pull themselves out of it. This video was so inspirational. If more people thought like this, it would be a much better place.
We LOVE you John. Thank you for spreading a message of Love when the world needs it most.
This is so important!
We really need to help each other calm down like just said…”man sitting in a chair” I heard you say that awhile ago at the HugNation site and I use it every time I can remember anyway.
We (everyone rather they realize it or not) are at the crossroads so to speak with this economic crisis. We can pitch fits and stomp our feet (which gets you know where) or we can change our thought processes and change what we “expect” or think we need. My husband was laid off 5 months ago and my hours were reduced to part time our financial situation took a big hit. I freaked out in the beginning but now we both look at this as a wonderful powerful time in our lives a “gift”. We have been recalibrating what is important I confess sometimes I miss my pedicures or buying a new purse for no reason. But to tell you the truth I feel more alive and happier then I remember feeling in a very long time. We have opened a new chapter and have changed I feel for the better.
The news will make you crazy they don’t tell you that this is a powerful time or that you can manifest what you need if you focus on what is important. Everyone has just gotten out of hand with want want want vs what do I really need!
Bravo! I hope we can keep this topic alive together we can, will, and need to make the shift!
Love love love
Another great video with a great message. I confess, I often get consumed in the doom and gloom media. At times it even effects my moods. My husband gets annoyed when I panic and tell him all the bad things going on in the world. I have had to take a step back and take a break from watching my fav news channels.. It just gets to be too much. Instead I have been focusing on my family, friends and what is good in my life.
Keep on promoting the positive...You are an inspiration Halcyon!
It's beyond refreshing to have a positive affirmation in a world advocating negativity and fear.
Thank you for this and the hugs!
Thank you for your positivity in the face of such adversity. America has been through this before, in the depression, and saw it's way through due to a of sense of community, hope, and love for one's neighbor. I believe we can do it again, and you are certainly on the right track. Peace, love, and positive energy!
Y'know, this morning I watched P.M. Gordon Brown on C-SPAN addressing the US Congress about this whole global crisis. And his message was a hopeful one. He said America is still a beacon of hope and opportunity all around the world, and that the global community is looking at us very closly in these times. They look to us for guidance and leadership in these troubled times. We can't aford to panic, to fear now. I wholeheartedly agree with your video. Not just as a nation, but as a world, we must put aside our fears and differences and come together to solve this crisis. Only by looking out for each other and not being selfish and worrying only about what ails us as a nation will we come out of this. Now is the time to stride forward with confidence and hope. Because really, there are so many people all around the world who've got it so much worse than we do. If we let our fear freeze us in our tracks now, we'll never get around to digging our way out of this mess. I also find it helps me to aleviate my uncertainty about the future by helping those around me that I see have it worse. By picking them up, I pick myself up. If we all spread hope instead of fear... well, then we won't be so anxious anymore. Okay, I'll stop now, sorry for rambling. :P Great video, as always, John.
It's okay to be afraid. Just don't let it run or ruin your life. Keep going one step after the other and don't be afraid to fall, because you will anyway. But like I always say, EVEN IF YOU FALL ON YOUR FACE, YOU'RE STILL MOVING FORWARD!
Keep preaching Halcyon! You're spot on about the fear message that gets forced down our throats by the MSM.
I think we should all ignore the doomsayers, stay positive, focus on what we can do in our sphere of influence, and keep working to be the best people we can. Help out your friends, family, strangers, and also important: yourself.
What's going to happen on the macro level is beyond your control, so don't fret it, just prepare. Don't stress over these externalities. Focus on the micro, on what you can affect and influence.
This video is too true. Nice work sir!

Thank you! This is really helpful!
Even after making my previous comment below, I managed to continue to get lost in that same fear loop and take up 10 more notches. Made for a crappy night.
It's one thing to know something intellectually, and another to have integrated it so deeply into your being that there is no other option. Ah how I long for the latter...
I am always amazed and astounded by your positivity. No matter how tight things become, we are truly fortunate for so much that is taken for granted.
From the mud springs a flower, and from trying times come lessons of hope and beauty. Know that you are loved and appreciated for always shining the light of joy into my life.
I couldn't agree with you more.
I refuse to watch the news or read the paper - I only watch and read positive programs such as yours! I love living optimistically - it quickens the road to my desires. See you on Twitter - @marthavan
Lovely video and lovely thoughts.
It's so easy to get trapped in the fear of the future and the regrets of the past but I fully agree with you, its the little moments now that can really change our perceptive and make it all better. Positive thinking is so key. I've been reading a lot of Buddhist literature a la the Dalai Lama, and his way of thinking is such a breath of fresh air.
This is why I stay away from the news. It's good to be well informed but everyone should vary their sources. Blogs are wonderful for that reason. Ah, the beauty of the internet.

"The best defense is a good offense" - Has never been more true, keep it positive, and uplifting. Go watch the film "Life is Beautiful" to see this concept taken to the absolute extreme.
Better yet, read: "Prisoners of Our Thoughts: Viktor Frankl's Principles for Discovering Meaning in Life and Work"
Hugs to you Halcyon!

Very zen. And it is true that fear based projection can be distracting and counter productive. I remind myself not to hoard or buy, sure, the thing I think I need won't be on sale next week. But how do I know I'll need that exactly, or that I wouldn't have wanted to spend my money a different way? It is a loss of potential, of freedom, to act on projection.
amen brova! i believe this is the essence of a good life. another thing byron katy says that i totally love, 'I am a lover of reality, because when i'm not i get stressed/anxious' (paraphrased) if you think about it, it's absurd to be anything other than a lover of reality!
keep on rockin it halcyon!

This video reminds me of the thought process I've developed over the years to deal with these sorts of fears.
If I'm worrying about something happening that I can't do anything about (economy collapse, earthquakes, etc) there are 2 possible outcomes:
a) it could happen, and all the time in the world spent worrying about it wouldn't have stopped it.
b) it doesn't happen, and time spent worrying about would just be wasted time.
Thanks for the videos that remind me and others about this!

I've been really enjoying this series. I would love to see more desire centered videos though. The perspectives that you've been sharing have been so wonderful. We need a lot more of this kind of reframing in the world. It's a lesson I find myself revisiting over and over. Cause who doesn't get caught up in those kind of self created stress loops from time to time?
Anyway, I hope to enjoy many more of these videos!
Cheers,
Halcyone

right on! Fear, it's the irrational element that clouds our ability to understand, perceive, and process that which is in front of us....
True, as always. Focus on the positive and the negative will take care of itself. Focusing on the negative will only make the bad things get work. Much like "object fixation" in motorcycle/automobile driving.
::smewtchies and hugs::
@Natalie
Thank you for watching!! I'm having a blast. :)
@Josh
-If that is what you want, then positive thinking sure won't hurt.
@Obscura -
SO TRUE. It is easy to hear the flow of bad news and start to think it is ALL bad news. TONS of people are thriving right now. It is dangerous to assume you won't be one of them.
@Emily -
I'm glad, too! (And I need these reminders DAILY. It's amazing how fast I forget.)
@Destin
- "Making myself miserable in an otherwise beautiful NOW due to fear of an undetermined future." Man, I feel like I struggle with this 10 times a day. THANK YOU for doing your work, btw.
@Skampy - I made that LouisCK video the "homework" for this week's HugNation broadcast!! I LOVE IT. "...what happened next? Did you FLY THROUGH THE AIR!?!?"
If we all think super positively maybe we can get our parents to let us live in their condo on the beach for free, and we can spend all day turning our skin into orange leather and our hair into pink straw. Fantastic words of advice, as always.
Another great video -- I look forward to them every week! Thanks for keeping us inspired and hopeful :)
I know these things but they drop off my consciousness sometimes and then the universe shows up with a video of YOU! I am so glad I stumbled upon your LJ blog years ago.
I'll tell anyone who will listen that there are tons of opportunities in the midst of all this fear.
You won't see'em if you're all freaked out. Make a commitment to yourself to be un-flappable so you can view life with an open mind and optimism.
in the words of louis ck (as seen on conan o'brien) "everything's amazing, nobody's happy."
Beautifully said. You truly are a spiritual teacher of our time. As much as I know these things that you speak of in this video, (hell, it's the basis of much of the work that I do, too), it's amazing how often I too can find myself in this same trap. Like last night. Freaking out about a reality that has not come to exist, simply b/c part of me FEARS that it'll come to be. Making myself miserable in an otherwise beautiful NOW due to fear of an undetermined future.
Thanks for the reminder.

Often I carry the facial expression and demeanor of the male shown near the word "regrets" of your titel and end segway. Its a bit too often and I fight every day with the unhappyness of seeing such small goals going down the tubes because of an overall bad decision that others made.
Last week was the hardest. I lost my job which was no big deal (I grown used to this due to the economy. I had living in SF as a training ground for that) but then my boyfriend lost his just 3 days later. Its worse when your team is losing than when its just you and yourself.
This will be a very useful video. I got tired of borrowing trouble last weekend.
FYI: JacobGlass.com is another great source of this type of ideas.
Now this is my kind of video. Thanks for sharing... such a wonderful message. Especially when everyone, including the President is talking about how difficult of times we are in. What a great message.
Thanks!
